Chapel Our Lady of Good
Situated in the village of Locqueltas, just before Pern Point. We pass in front of a stone trough which, according to legend, was the boat in which St. Gildas crossed the Channel, then we see the chapel.
It was built in Locqueltas toward the end of the 19th. century on the ruins of an older chapel, some parts of which were used in the construction.
An annual Pardon used to be celebrated there during the first weekend of september.
Chapel Our Lady of Good Hope
Situated in the village of Kerber, this is one of the two remaining chapels on the island. Next to it was to be found in former times the Manor of the Marquis de Rieux, who became proprietor of Ushant in 1598. It was sold as a state possession during the revolution. Its stones were used to build some of the village houses and one on them bears the coat of arms of the Eussaf d'Oixant family - long since extinguised - whose motto was "mar kouez en em sav" : "if he falls, he gets up again". The Ushant Flag, which can be seen at the townhall, is based on this coat of arms.
Proella , a former island tradition
Proella - homecoming in the breton - is a former funereal tradition on Ushant for those lost at sea whose bodies were never recovered. In the cemetery next to the church can still be seen the Proella monument which reminds all of the heavy tribute paid to the sea by the islanders. A small wax cross, called the Proella - the term is also used for the ritual itself - was watched and mourned before being brought to the church where a funeral mass was celebrated.
It was then placed in a wooden urn behind the altar, later to be transferred to the cemetery on a special occasion such as a mission or a visit by the Bishop.
The Church of St. Paul Aurelien
The Church of St. Paul Aurelien, the island's only church, is to be found in the heart of Lampaul village. The church was rebuilt in 1860, according to the plans of the architect Le Bigot and is dedicated to the first evangelist to come to the island in 517.
The only remnants of the ancient church are some statues, among which one of St Barbe (XVI) and another of the Christ, to be found behind the main altar. The spire remained unfinished for many years and was finally completed thanks to a gift from the British Crown in 1896, following the shipwreck of the Drummond Castle, a steam-packet that foundered on the Pierres Vertes west of Molène Island in heavy fog. Of the 243 people on board only three survived, and the islanders gave a decent burial to all the bodies found.
